Geography

Intent

Across the Greenhills First Federation, we intend to deliver a high quality geography curriculum that inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We aim to extend the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world they live in; about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. Our curriculum is planned to develop in pupils a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and about the interaction between physical and human processes.

We intend to create confident, resilient, independent learners, with a love of learning and with high aspirations for the future. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We intend to develop respectful individuals who value keeping themselves healthy in mind and body and make positive contributions to their community.

We look for the awe and wonder in the world around us and celebrate our part in this. Through our Christian or individual beliefs, we develop our spirituality and opportunities for reflection through learning about geography.

Implementation

Geography is normally taught as part of a half-termly topic, focusing on the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. It is taught on a rolling programme to ensure all key skills and knowledge are taught and revisited throughout both Key Stages.

Our geography lessons provide children the opportunity to extend their vocabulary through reading, discussion and research.

We aim to provide children with the opportunity to enrich their lives by exposing them to a variety of first hand experiences and opportunities. We recognise the importance of first hand learning and plan opportunities for children to gather information in the field, to use primary sources and to learn from visits and visitors.

Impact

We aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We measure the impact of our geography teaching and curriculum by assessing the ability of pupils to:

-Investigate places

-Investigate patterns

-Communicate geographically
