PSHE

Intent

Across the Greenhills First Federation we intend to deliver a high quality PSHCE curriculum that enables pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence. It enables pupils to distinguish between right choices and to accept responsibilities and show initiative.

Our aim is to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for PSHCE whilst also giving our children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become healthy and independent global citizens with a clear understanding of well-being, both physical and emotional.

We have planned our curriculum to extend the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world they live in, to enable them to use their skills confidently and in a range of situations and enrich their lives by exposing them to a variety of first-hand experiences and opportunities. We intend to create confident, resilient, independent learners, with a love of learning and with high aspirations for the future. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.

We look for the awe and wonder in the world around us and celebrate our part in this. Through our Christian or individual beliefs, we develop our spirituality and opportunities for reflection.

Implementation

PSHCE is taught (in part) through discrete weekly lessons in year groups using the JIGSAW scheme of work.  The scheme brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.  The JIGSAW scheme links to the British Values agenda with the 5 strands of the British Values agenda been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson). SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are also included, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world.

Our PSHCE curriculum is taught discretely and is in addition embedded throughout out curriculum to give depth to the children’s understanding and allow them to experience PSHCE in a range of contexts.  The children take part in a range of tasks that promote active citizenship such as fund raising for charity, being part of a school council and taking part in community events.

Staff are always aware of the need to be reactive within their teaching of PSHCE so they will respond to events that occur within school, locally, nationally and globally in a way that is appropriate.

As part of a focussed Annual PSHE curriculum week all the children engage in additional activities and learning that promotes looking after our emotional and mental health as well as our physical health. This is also used as opportunity to promote safety of all children including internet safety.

Impact

PSHE is the subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives now and in the future.  It helps them stay healthy, safe and prepares them from life in modern Britain.

We believe that a good quality PSHCE education will improve the physical and psychosocial well-being of all pupils.  If our children have good health and well-being they can achieve better academically.

RSE DAY Celebrating Difference – Everyone Can Sparkle

The children had a fantastic time celebrating their differences and recognising what makes them special and unique. The children took part in lots of activities and all ‘sparkled’ with their own glittery tattoo. At the end of the day in Collective Worship, the children shared their work that they produced around diversity and treating one another with respect.
