Physical Activity at Denby
At Denby CE (VA) First School we encourage all pupils to engage in an active lifestyle by promoting inclusivity in sport. We do this by:
1) Encouragement of participation in a range of sports during PE lessons and play times.
2) Supporting pupils in the acquirement of skills to compete in sports competitions organised through school and the community.
International Women's Day -Girls Football
As 8th March marked 'International Women's Day' we celebrated the occasion by joining in with a countrywide challenge - to have as many girls playing football as possible on the same day!
As women's football continues to grow, and build on the huge successes of England's Lionesses, many of our girls loved the chance to join in!
Bringing Books To Life
KS1 Cross Country
We had a good turn out for our Cross Country team at Shelley College this Autumn. 11 children took part and the support for each other and our school was, as always, fantastic! An especially big ‘well done’ to the four Reception children who took part after only being in school for 3 full weeks!
It was brilliant to see how well our pupils followed the instructions of Andy Morris and the Sports Leaders. Mrs Berry and Mrs Hoogland were very impressed with their sportsmanship and way they represented our school.
Well done, everyone!
Year 4 and 5 Girls’ Athlete Mentoring Day
To build self-esteem, resilience and promote the positive impact of physical activity on physical and mental wellbeing, the Year 4 and 5 girls within the Federation all took part in a series of workshops led by Commonwealth Silver & Bronze Medallist, Jenny Wallwalk.
The girls from Thurstonland and Farnley Tyas travelled to Denby First School, where over the course of the day, many new friendships were formed through group activities that promoted teamwork, problem solving and being active. Jenny also shared her personal story about her journey to success and how she overcame difficulties along the way.
Well done to all of the Year 4 and 5 girls for trying new activities, being positive and working collaboratively together as a Federation.
Year 2/3 Football Tournament
On Tuesday 22nd March we took part in the Year 2/3 Football Tournament at 5core, where we competed against other First Schools in the Shelley Pyramid.
Well done to all those that took part - we came in 7th!
Dance Festival 2021
Our dedicated dancers gave a fantastic performance at the recent Dance Festival held at Shelley College!
After choreographing the routine and rehearsing with Miss Natalie the girls performed brilliantly on the night - well done, we are very proud of you all!
Inspiring Assembly
Andy Morris from Shelley College led our assembly on Tuesday 12th October along with Shelley College student, Kaylie. The focus was about inspiring girls to become more involved in sporting activities, although I'm sure most of the staff will agree we all felt more inspired after his assembly!
In her spare time, Kaylie is a keen gymnast and regularly competes in high level competitions. Mr Morris and Kaylie explained to the children how everyone can find a sport that they enjoy and if you practise you will always improve.
Children were told about events that take place within the area that they can become involved in, as well as other opportunities that will be coming up.
A current pupil at Shelley College shared her story about the different sporting activities and hobbies that she has and still does enjoy.
KS2 Cross Country
A huge Well done to Sam (Yr5), Abigail (YR5), Tilly (YR3) and Edie (YR3) for taking part in the cross country event at Shelley College on Tuesday 21st September. All did a fantastic job of completing the entire course and were smiling at the end! A fantastic effort!
KS2 Cycling Event
Despite the terrible weather, the Cycling Event organised by Shelley College was able to go ahead in July.
Well done to all those that were able to take part and thank you for sharing your photos with us!
There are many more sporting events planned for next year and we are sure the children will enjoy taking part.
Cross Country
Class 1 and Class 2 have taken part in in the Inter-School Cross Country Event at Shelley College over the last few weeks. Class 3 will be taking part next week.
It was fantastic to see the children taking part in sport with other schools once again.
All of the children finished the course but a special mention to Joshua who finished 1st and Harry 5th in the Year 1 race – well done to all!
In December, a group of Year 4 and 5 children took part in the Virtual Arts Festival. The children worked alongside Miss Natalie who helped them choreograph a Lockdown Melody. I'm sure you will agree that the children have done a fantastic job of learning and remembering all of the moves!
In October, we welcomed in some of the PE teachers from the Shelley Pyramid who organised and led QUAD kids with all of our children. The children had to complete a series of challenges in the quickest time possible.
We did it! Denby are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Gold School Games Mark Award. Thank you to everyone who helped us with this fantastic achievement and a big congratulations and well done to our children!
